#1 travel hack: Get a day room

Knowing you can get a hotel room during the day will change how you travel!

I still haven’t watched the acclaimed show “The White Lotus,” but I’ve seen a quote of something that Parker Posey’s character said in an episode: “I just don’t think at this age that I’m meant to live an uncomfortable life.” I probably wouldn’t have thought to get a day room earlier in my traveling life, but these days, it’s practically a necessity now that I’m busier and *ahem* older.

Take, for example, my recent flight to Barcelona. My flight left Boston at 7:30 pm and arrived in Barcelona a little after 7 am. Even with some time to go through customs and get to the city center, that still would have left me with roughly six hours before I could have checked into my hotel.

So I used the site dayuse.com to reserve a day room at the Hotel Indigo Placa Espanya, not too far from my own hotel I was meant to stay at for my two pre-cruise nights in Barcelona.

I had the hotel room for eight hours, from 10 am until 6 pm. When I arrived in the room, I took a nap for about three hours, and then took a shower and changed into clean clothes. It felt amazing.

Because my work always follows me when I travel, I spent the rest of the time in the room doing travel agent duties and having a Zoom call with my associate dean at the university. For eight hours, this room became my office/living space, and it was a much more comfortable way to spend the time than I would have had sitting in the lobby waiting to check into my hotel.

Depending on the date and the location, a day room will usually cost between $100-$200. For some people, it’s money they’d rather spend on something else. But I see the value in it, and let’s be honest — I just don’t think at this age that I’m meant to live an uncomfortable life.
