Should you book a cruise in March? Yes, but…

Choose longer cruises and certain cruise lines to avoid spring breakers

I had to search my photos long and hard to find this picture of a crowded pool at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. That’s because, well, I tend to stay away from crowds when I cruise.

Cruises are notoriously popular Spring Break vacations. These cruises are usually during March and parts of April, but sometimes, those are the only times of the year you can cruise. So what do you do if you want to take a relaxing cruise during these months?

I have two suggestions for making a March cruise work for you. The first is to choose certain cruise lines over others. Cruise lines like Celebrity and Holland America offer all of the same things as more popular lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival, but they tend to cater less to families and younger people.

Another suggestion is to stick to longer cruises, if you can. I remember the first time I (accidentally) encountered a real “spring break” cruise full of loud, young party people. It was a 5-night cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas, and my friend and I spent most of the nights hanging out in the Diamond Lounge and staying away from the jam-packed bars and lounges in the rest of the ship.

(I will say though, those are great cruises if you’re an early riser. We had the ship nearly to ourselves until nearly 11 am every day because the college kids were sleeping in, haha.)

So if you’re looking for a longer cruise on a more relaxed, “adult” cruise line, don’t discount March out of hand. In fact, sometimes the week-long cruises (and longer) can be a great deal during this time of year! Contact me if you’d like pricing for a March cruise, and let me help you avoid the spring breakers.
