Quietly Making Noise

Doing the “speakeasy” experience on the Margaritaville at Sea Islander

When, like me, you’re a Jimmy Buffett fan, you keep your ears open for opportunities to honor your favorite singer’s legacy. Jimmy died in September 2023, and for many of us, it was a huge loss.

If you’re a late-40s Parrothead like me, you might have come later in life to your appreciation of Jimmy Buffett’s life and story. You may have stumbled upon a book like Jimmy Buffett: A Good Life All the Way, which, as a sidebar, uses as its title a line from my favorite Jimmy song, “He Went to Paris.” (The Amazon link for the book is an affiliate link that gives me a small percentage of your purchase at no extra cost to you. It’s a great book!)

If you’re a relative newcomer to true Parrothead status, like me, or if you’ve been a fan of Jimmy’s music for years, the “Quietly Making Noise” experience is a great option for your Islander cruise. You’ll frequently hear this being referred to as the “speakeasy” experience, and it’s true that it’s not really advertised. You have to make a reservation at Guest Services, and it’s not promoted in the onboard materials. The door to the room where the experience happens is unmarked and you wouldn’t even know it was there until your guide for the experience took you inside it.

I’m not going to talk much about the Speakeasy experience, because, well, that would kind of defeat the purpose. All I’ll say is this: you should definitely do it, even if you’re not a huge Jimmy Buffett fan; you should book it ASAP when you’re onboard, as it sells out quickly; and you should expect to have a couple of (delicious) cocktails during the experience.
